As the series begins, he is a civilian living at the Side 7 research colony, the neglected son of a Federation Forces engineer. When Zeon mobile suits attack the colony, Amuro commandeers the prototype Gundam and defeats the invaders. He soon finds himself part of the substitute crew of the Federation warship White Base, and this moody young man begins to develop strong bonds with his newfound "family." Meanwhile, Amuro's increasing fighting skills suggest that he has potential far beyond that of ordinary mortals...

Bright is an officer cadet, with just six months' service under his belt, when the assault carrier White Base arrives at Side 7. As acting captain of the White Base, Bright rises to the occasion and leads his crew of civilian recruits through one crisis after another. However, his strict leadership often creates friction with his headstrong pilots, especially Amuro.

This aloof and mysterious young woman was formerly a medical student at Side 7. After the Zeon attack, Sayla joins the White Crew as a communications officer, and later becomes a capable combat pilot. But from the very beginning of the series, it's apparent that there's more to Sayla than she's letting on. Why does she react so strongly to her chance encounter with enemy ace Char Aznable, Zeon's infamous Red Comet? What secrets does her past hold?

Age: 18 / Height: 163 cm / Position: Pilot of White Base

Mirai is another of the civilians who joins the White Base crew after the attack on Side 7. Her training as a space glider pilot makes her the best choice to take the White Base's helm, and Mirai soon becomes Bright's trusted deputy and a surrogate mother to the ship's young crew. She is also the daughter of a powerful and well-connected family, which causes complications later in the series.

Matilda is an officer of the Federation Forces' supply corps, who appears whenever the White Base's need is most dire in order to deliver vital supplies, new equipment, and repair services. She also seems to function as a personal envoy for General Revil, carrying messages back and forth between this high-ranking commander and the beleaguered ship. And not only is pretty Matilda the White Base's guardian angel, but also the dream girl of every boy and man in its lovestruck male crew.

Age: 17 / Height: 168 cm / Position: Pilot of RX-77 Guncannon

Another of the White Base's crew of civilian recruits, Kai is a confirmed coward and cynic - the smart-mouthed black sheep of the White Base crew. While his fellow pilots are struggling to save the ship, Kai can often be found cowering behind them, or mocking them from the sidelines. Still, he'll do his part when he must, and as the series continues Kai begins to understand what he and his comrades are fighting for.

Age: 15 / Height: 150 cm / Position: Pilot of RX-75 Guntank

Hayato, with his black belt in judo, would be the first to warn you not underestimate him just because of his size. After the attack on Side 7, the pint-sized Hayato joins the White Base crew and volunteers for pilot training, largely out of a sense of rivalry with his former neighbor Amuro. Though his fighting skills can't compare to Amuro's, Hayato is loyal, fearless, and determined.

The jovial Ryu, a Federation Forces pilot trainee, is one of the only survivors of the White Base's original crew. Ryu's combination of good humor and military background lets him intercede between uptight captain Bright and the ship's civilian pilots. Despite his training, Ryu is a fairly reckless pilot, often rushing into the middle of battle in a puny Core Fighter in an attempt to help out his fellow pilots.

Swaggering, cocky Sleggar is a late addition to the White Base crew, assigned to the ship after it reaches the Federation Forces headquarters at Jaburo. While initially condescending to his under-age crewmates, he soon develops a mutual respect for them, and becomes a valuable member of the White Base's pilot team. The other members of the White Base's crew are a motley mix of civilian recruits and inexperienced military cadets. Among them are Oscar Dublin and Marker Clan, the ship's hard-working bridge operators; Job John and Omur Fang, who double as both mechanics and backup pilots; and Tamura, the ship's cook. Every member of the crew is pushed to his or her limits in the White Base's daily struggle for survival.

General Revil is a high-ranking commander in the Earth Federation Forces, and the leader of some of the Federation's most important counteroffensives against the Zeons. He takes a particular interest in the White Base and its crew, sending them supplies and experimental weapons through somewhat unorthodox channels. Whether he's genuinely concerned for their welfare or simply observing how they perform under stress, Revil is nonetheless one of the White Base's only sources of support.
